Glisan Street Development Project
Helen’s Pacific Costumers, which once occupied the building at 7500 NE Glisan Street, permanently closed in November, 2017. The costume shop had been open for 127 years! (For awesome photos of Helen’s custom-built mascots, check out photos here: http://helenspacificcostumers.com/custom-built/).
The building has been purchased and renovations are already underway. It will be converted into four small commercial spaces for retail-, services- and/or food-oriented businesses. The new owner, Phil Coutrakon, is interested in connecting with anyone wanting to set up shop on East Glisan. He can provide information about square footage of the planned spaces. Contact Phil at philcoutrakon@gmail.com to learn more.
Spotlight on 82nd Avenue
A small but busy stretch of 82nd Avenue between East Glisan and SE Stark Street is one of the sectors of the Montavilla East Tabor business district and home to district member Washman Car Wash and Auto Spa. A popular place to get your car squeaky clean, especially on clear days after weeks of rain, Washman uses biodegradable soap, limits the amount of water used on each car, and recycles dirty water so there is less of an environmental impact. It also saves customers about 30 gallons per wash that they would be using if washing cars at home. Customers also receive a free vacuum token with every wash. Doesn’t your car deserve a spa day?
Montavilla’s Business District Is Taking Shape
The physical aspects of the district have been shaped by property sales and new tenancies over the last four years, changes that will likely continue in the near future. The Association currently tracks 366 businesses within the district. Of these businesses, 111 are member businesses. In 2014-16, membership numbers grew from 24, to 50, to 84, respectively. 2017 marked the year of the Association’s largest member expansion, a 32% increase over the previous year. Business types include retail (18%), restaurants and bars (15%), services (42%), health and wellness (19%), and nonprofit organizations (6%). Approximately 12% of METBA members are home-based.
At the start of every new year, Association members are asked to renew their annual memberships. The goal this year is to bring membership up to 150 businesses. With a strong base of membership support and participation, the district can realize financial sustainability for its operations and for special events, especially the annual summer street fair.
A Few Reasons Why You Should Visit East Glisan
Changes are happening fast in the City of Roses, and the Montavilla-East Tabor district is seeing them as well. Several new businesses have established their presence in the East Glisan sector of the district.
Blank Slate, which officially opened at 7201 NE Glisan Street in late May, serves craft cocktails, beer, wine and small plates in a contemporary yet cozy space.
Foster Buds (formerly Glisan Buds) has opened a second dispensary location in Montavilla, also at 7201 NE Glisan. It offers an array of products (edibles, topicals, concentrates, etc.), daily deals, and veterans and senior discounts.
Rerun, a community re-sale store that has been in business since 2005 on NE Fremont Street, has opened a furniture annex at 6900 NE Glisan Street. The annex hours are 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. Last year, Rerun won “Best of Portland” honors by WW voters in the category of Best Furniture.
Along with these businesses, East Glisan is also home to METBA Association business members US Bank, Fillmore Coffee, Grocery Getter Organic, Highland Christian Center, East Glisan Pizza Lounge, Fressen Bakery (opening soon), Paitong Thai, Washman, Mt. Tabor Cross Fit, New Heights Physical Therapy, Roland Havens Insurance Agency, Si’s Auto Body, Sunshine on Glisan: Laundry and Cleaners, and Bridgetown Chiropractic.
Weathering the storm
Portland is a city of neighborhoods, and those neighborhoods are home to 20,000 small businesses city-wide. A recent story that appeared in the Portland Tribune (http://portlandtribune.com/pt/10-opinion/344880-224560-letter-show-some-love-to-local-small-businesses) describes the impact that a series of recent winter storms had on local businesses.
“The winter storms that pummeled Portland in December and January were hard on everyone, including our local small businesses. Many were forced to close as the roads iced up and employees struggled to get to work. And it couldn’t come at a worse time — the holiday season, from Thanksgiving to Valentine’s Day, is critical to the success of a small business.”
Local businesses support local projects and organizations, even though their pockets might not be as deep as those of national chain stores. They invest in the communities that keep their doors open, and they often tackle problems that affect the business and residential environment. The article cites examples of “business owners in Gateway [that] removed nearly 500 pounds of garbage and cleaned up graffiti on dozens of buildings in East Portland.” Other city businesses provided resources to community members in need.
Small businesses also contribute a lot to the local economy – in terms of jobs and tax revenue. It’s important for consumers to know that shopping at local businesses means more money remaining here (70% of every dollar spent) than going into the pocket of out-of-state internet retailers.
