What is METBA?

METBA (Montavilla/East Tabor Business Association) is comprised of a volunteer board and member businesses with a common goal of creating a strong local economy. The work of the Association contributes to a thriving business district that provides a vibrant hub for members of the community to gather and interact. Currently comprised of around 100 member businesses, METBA:

  • Organizes the summer street fair

  • Promotes local businesses on Facebook, Instagram, and our website Biz

  • Hosts First Friday events, Trick-or-Treat on Glisan Street, and Frosty Fest

  • Facilitates regular networking events for local business owners

  • Recruits new businesses to fill gaps in needed goods and services within the district.

We envision a business district that, like a small town, provides residents with “a little bit of everything” to meet day-to-day needs within a short walk or drive. Please visit our website – Montavilla.Biz. Montavilla.Biz is the resource for information about what is happening within the district and the community. Find out what Montavilla has to offer.

Go Local Montavilla!

July 12, 2017 by steve_rice Leave a Comment

Montavilla has a long history and identity. Montavilla (pronounced like Godzilla) was a popular place to live at the end of the 19th century.  A streetcar line that traveled up East Glisan with a trolley stop on Stark brought growth and development along the streetcar line. It was a town within a city – with a post office, bank, blacksmith, and businesses selling groceries and other goods.

The business district, which now includes four sectors – East Glisan, 82nd Avenue, Stark Street East, and Historic Downtown –  has undergone revitalization in the last 15 years. The 300+ businesses that make up the district are overwhelmingly locally owned and operated. Many business owners and their employees live in and around Montavilla. This makes for strong community.

Montavilla businesses give regularly to local events and causes. They donate goods and money to school and church fundraisers and financially support the Street Fair, Jazz Fest, and Montavilla Farmers Market among others.

You can reaffirm this value in strong communities by giving support to our local businesses. Supporting local business is one of the best ways to grow and sustain a thriving neighborhood economy and to ensure that Montavilla’s future is as vibrant as its history.

What can you do? Go Local Montavilla!

  • Expand your awareness. Ramble around and check out businesses you’ve never been to. Start by visiting Biz to get information on local food and drink, health and wellness, retail and other services.
  • Reflect on your current shopping habits. Are there things you are buying outside the neighborhood that are available right here?
  • Participate in business district events. The business district is a community hub. Visit the calendar of events at Biz and come out with your friends and family.
  • Buy local goods and services. When you do, 70% of every dollar stays in the local economy.

When local residents and local businesses invest in each other, it enriches and strengthens the community. Businesses with membership in the business association are listed below. We hope you’ll visit them soon.

Mt. Tabor Villa Announced

May 31, 2017 by steve_rice 9 Comments

Randy Rappaport, the Portland developer who purchased the Beets Automotive property last year, has plans to put a 4-story building on the lot. Rappaport hopes to create a public / private partnership with the City of Portland to develop a mixed use building with a 4,500 square foot grocery store on the ground level and 60 apartment units above. The plan includes 25 parking spaces – 10 for shoppers and 15 spaces for residents.

Rappaport describes the apartment project as “workforce housing” – housing that’s affordable for someone working the average sort of job. Aimed at increasing the supply of housing in Montavilla, the units will be small, but functional. For example, the one bedrooms will be 400 square feet in size.

In order for the project to move forward with the city’s approval, Rappaport will need the support of the business community and resident groups. He has outreach plans to visit a neighborhood association meeting in the future and will also be on the agenda for the next METBA luncheon meeting on July 11th from 12-1:30pm at the Flying Pie Pizzeria.
