Test Your Montavilla Knowledge!

June 3, 2019 by camille_eber Leave a Comment

Did you know…

  • Montavilla has a vigorous business community and many businesses are members of the Montavilla East Tabor Business Association (METBA) which brings several events per year to your neighborhood,
    including:
  • Montavilla Street Fair – Coming up on Sunday, July 28 from 10 am until 5 pm, the fair has:
    • no admission fee
    • fun activities for the entire family
    • over 120 vendor booths to browse
    • live music (on two stages) to shake a leg to
    • a children’s area
  • Montavilla Mixer is a networking series for district business owners and managers (the next one is just around the corner on Tuesday, June 11 at Threshold Brewing from 6:30 pm until 8:00 pm).
  • It’s prime farmers market season and the Montavilla Farmers Market takes place in downtown Montavilla every Sunday, May through October, as well as, a handful of winter market dates. The market provides some assistance to those in need via Everybody Eats. They are always looking for sponsors and provide a generous benefits package for those who can contribute.
  • The backdrop to the Montavilla area is your magnificent 196-acre Mt. Tabor Park ranking on TripAdvisor as #6 out of 96 in Portland Parks. The park dates back before 1900 and sits on an extinct volcanic cinder cone. It is home to three of five Portland open drinking water reservoirs (the other two are in Washington Park). There are 293 stairs encompassing several sections from the SE Yamhill/SE 69th Street entrance to reach the park summit at an elevation of 635 feet. And that bronze guy at the park summit is Harvey W. Scott, long-time editor of The Oregonian newspaper. The Park is home to the PDX Adult Soapbox Derby happening this year on Saturday, August 17. There are three main trails ranging in
distance from 1 to 3 miles. It’s an outdoor recreational paradise you can hike, walk, bike, play tennis or basketball, play horseshoes, swing, spin on a merry-go-round, volunteer for park services, reserve a covered picnic spot for a large group, or enjoy an evening picnic with your sweetie.
  • Montavilla Park at SE Glisan and 82nd Avenue is another great family spot. Friday, August 30 the park will host a Portland Concert in the Park featuring Mo Phillips and The Grumpies – hilarious family dance jams – and a movie (Dumbo, 2019) with a PG rating. Concert begins at 6:30 pm and the movie begins after dusk.
  • Montavilla is host to a large group of diverse businesses – you can purchase handcrafted goat milk skin care products, receive acupuncture, get your eyes checked, have a tooth filled, grab a coffee and breakfast sandwich, take guitar lessons, pick up plywood or new furniture, donate time to help those in need, take a pizza to the park for a picnic, hit up a ballet or yoga class, sip tea with a friend, get your car fender-bender or engine fixed, treat yourself to a massage, grab lunch at different place each day, imbibe a cocktail or local beer with dinner (wearing your locally made and Montavilla-sold jewelry) before heading off to the movies!

All within a short radius from the central business district are services to meet an array of your needs and wants and entertainment. Offerings include:

  • accounting and tax services
  • acupuncture
  • antique shops
  • architecture services
  • attorney services
  • auto body repair services

Glisan Street Development Project

April 18, 2018 by Julie Koroch Leave a Comment

Helen’s Pacific Costumers, which once occupied the building at 7500 NE Glisan Street, permanently closed in November, 2017. The costume shop had been open for 127 years! (For awesome photos of Helen’s custom-built mascots, check out photos here: http://helenspacificcostumers.com/custom-built/).

The building has been purchased and renovations are already underway. It will be converted into four small commercial spaces for retail-, services- and/or food-oriented businesses. The new owner, Phil Coutrakon, is interested in connecting with anyone wanting to set up shop on East Glisan. He can provide information about square footage of the planned spaces. Contact Phil at philcoutrakon@gmail.com to learn more.

Spotlight on 82nd Avenue

March 22, 2018 by Julie Koroch Leave a Comment

A small but busy stretch of 82nd Avenue between East Glisan and SE Stark Street is one of the sectors of the Montavilla East Tabor business district and home to district member Washman Car Wash and Auto Spa. A popular place to get your car squeaky clean, especially on clear days after weeks of rain, Washman uses biodegradable soap, limits the amount of water used on each car, and recycles dirty water so there is less of an environmental impact. It also saves customers about 30 gallons per wash that they would be using if washing cars at home. Customers also receive a free vacuum token with every wash. Doesn’t your car deserve a spa day?

Changes at Union Rose

October 12, 2014 by Tina Leave a Comment

rita-hudsonWe thought that we would share an excerpt from the Union Rose website:

Hello everyone. Changes are afoot at Union Rose, and it’s time to tell you about it.

For seven years, first on MLK and now in my beloved Montavilla neighborhood, Union Rose has been THE place to find locally made stuff with soul. I have been more than proud to feature some of the best talent and designers found in Portland, and have loved bringing you my own clothing line, Big Brown Eyes. At this time, however, it’s time for me to move on, try my hand at some new things, and embrace change.

Come September, Union Rose will have a new owner. Rita Hudson-Evalt, the designer of Hubris Apparel, will take over. Hubris is one of the shop’s most popular and beloved lines, fitting women in sizes XS-3X beautifully and comfortably.

“I am so excited and honored to be taking the helm at Union Rose!” says Rita. “It was one of the first shops to carry Hubris Apparel. My line has grown into a brand sold nationally because of the kindness and encouragement that Nicole, the clientele, and the shop itself have fostered.

“I fully intend to continue to support designers’ growth in Portland and the Pacific Northwest through the best way I know – offering their products to happy customers. You can expect to see some new apparel, jewelry, and gifts in the shop soon! Of course, we’ll still carry all the lines now found at Union Rose, but I’ll work on expanding our selection as well.”
